"Why companies and people do the things they do"

We've all had experiences like this at one time or another.              So why is that?
Maybe it's at a restaurant, retail store, gas station, grocery store, hotel, or just a customer service interaction with an employee.  This website is all about asking that question.... "Do you ever wonder why a company or an employee does something a certain way?"

I'm using this website to share my interactions with you, and I'll ask you to share similar experiences with me to post on this web site too.  Maybe together we can figure out why things are done the way they are.  I'll offer suggestios where appropriate, and would appreciate your comments too.

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you enjoy the stories that are shared on the website.
August 15, 2008 - McDonald's Port Washington, WI - Wi-Fi?

So I happen to stop at this particular McDonald's location once in awhile.  I always seem to get the not so helpful employees, or the kind that don't seem like they really want to be there.  I like this location, as it's easy access off the highway, and generally pretty clean.

So here's my question to the not so thrilled employee, oh and by the way, I wasn't waited on for over two minutes.  There was no other customers there, the employees just were changing shifts or something, and didn't seem to really care who was at the counter.  Anyway, my question was "Do you have wi-fi here?".  Not so difficult I thought.... the employee's answer back to me was "I'm not sure".  I looked at her and waited for her to come up with a better answer, and she did, she asked another employee who was also clueless, and said "Yeah I think we have it".  So I took my happy meal (actually a burger and fries) and went over to sit down, opened my laptop, and low and behold they do!

However, if it were my McDonald's location, I'd do a few things differently.
    1. I would train the employees to know that we do have free wi-fi for
customers, and let them know it's a marketing tool that could bring in
       more paying guests.
    2. I would change the wireless router address to read "McDonald's Port
Washington" or something like that, instead of "Linksys".  This way the
customers would feel better that it's the right wireless access point
       to use.
    3. Finally, I'd put a sign out at the parking lot entrance to market to
potential customers like myself.  Why not?  I've seen this done at
other restaurant locations, and it only seems to make sense. I was
always told, if you're going to sell strawberry's, you should put up a
       for sale sign.
